Hooking people
Bri Williams
There was something extra special about a Hook cartoon.
Appearing in Australian newspapers throughout the 1970โs and 80โs, Geoff (Jeff) Hook famously buried a โfishhookโ within his intricate line drawings.
This did two things.
-
Differentiated Hookโs work from others. The hook was his signature move that no other cartoonist could emulate, enhancing his brand.
-
Heightened engagement. By creating a secondary layer within the work, Hook gave readers two benefits from engaging โ the humour of the cartoon itself and the mental stimulation of looking for the fishhook.
When it comes to your work, how are you hooking people?
P.S. Did you find the hook, or do you need a 'heads-up'?
