Forrest was wrong
Bri Williams
Forrest Gump famously said that life was like a box of chocolates - you never know what youโre gonna get.
But thatโs not really true, is it?
Because boxes of chocolates come with a selection guide.
You can know what youโre going to get.
Which speaks to a whole other human experience.
The torturous nature of choice.
- The opportunity cost of choosing one thing over another.
- The impact language and visual cues have on our expectations.
- The anticipatory regret you wrestle with if you try something new rather than opting for a tried and true favourite.
- The temporary nature of pleasure and bittersweet notion that the box is finite.
- The social implications of your choice on someone else.
A box of chocolates is indeed a handy metaphor for life, just not the way Forrest imagined.
